Vizitsa
 |
The beautiful mountainous village of Vizitsa is located 30 km from Volos. It is built at an altitude of 550 meters in a densely forested area. Its hallmark is the well-preserved Pelion mansions, which are a living part of the village's rich history.
At the entrance of the village stands the large paved square, with its centuries-old plane trees, picturesque taverns, and traditional cafes.
Walking through the narrow cobbled streets of the settlement, you will see the traditional houses and old mansions. Some of these have been restored by the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT) and today function as guesthouses.
Continuing your stroll through the village streets, you will come across the Church of Saint John the Baptist, built in 1797, notable for its frescoes. In the center of the village is also the Church of Zoodochos Pigi, recently restored and attracting many worshippers.
A defining feature of Vizitsa is its restored mansions, which give the village a noble appearance and have contributed to its tourist development, attracting many visitors.
The restoration effort began about 20 years ago, when the EOT requested and acquired seven old mansions from their owners for restoration and rental purposes. These mansions are mainly three-story constructions from the 18th century and represent typical Pelion architecture. They are built of stone with thick stone walls. Their doors have a marble or stone lintel. In the past, the ground floor served as storage. The first floor, where the family lived mainly during the winter, housed the kitchen, while the second floor, brighter with many windows, was used in the summer and for receiving guests.
The mansions restored under the EOT initiative retain their original exterior appearance. Their interiors have been modified, as all of them now function as traditional guesthouses.
