Nea Ionia is located northwest of Volos. The city is characterized by the atmosphere of its old neighborhoods, which have been largely preserved to this day. It occupies the broader area of the Xirokampos valley.
The boundary between the Municipality of Volos and the Municipality of Nea Ionia is marked by the Krafsidonas River, which originates from the foothills of Pelion and flows into the Pagasetic Gulf.
The Municipality of Nea Ionia takes its name from the first refugees from Asia Minor who settled in the area and named their neighborhood Nea Ionia.
Today, the city has experienced significant development, offering sports facilities, a summer theater, green spaces, parks, industries, private businesses, and public services.
A hallmark of Nea Ionia is its famous tsipouradika (traditional ouzo and tsipouro bars). These establishments have become a cultural institution for the city, originating with the Asia Minor refugees. Traditionally, after work, they would gather in local cafés to enjoy tsipouro accompanied by small plates of meze. Over time, as orders increased, the meze became more elaborate. This custom turned into a lasting tradition and continues to this day. Tsipouradika have become a central social gathering place for locals and are now renowned throughout Greece.
