Katichori
 |
Just 3 km from Portaria lies the picturesque village of Katichori, a traditional Pelion village divided into two neighborhoods, with houses that are characteristic examples of Pelion architecture. Nestled within lush greenery, it is perfect for nature walks and enjoying the surrounding landscapes.
In Katichori, locals cultivate olives, apple trees, vegetables, and high-quality vineyards, which have supported the production of wine and the famous local spirit, tsipouro, for generations. Every summer, at the end of June, the “Tsipouro Festival” takes place, where visitors can watch the traditional production process and taste the freshly made tsipouro.
The village is dotted with numerous chapels, dating from the Byzantine era to more recent times. The oldest, dating back to the 1600s, have been restored in recent years. Some notable chapels include Saint George, Prophet Elias, Saint Marina, Holy Trinity, Saint Paraskevi, and Panagia Megalogenous, all situated in scenic spots around the village.
Be sure to visit the Byzantine Church of Saint Athanasios and the Hatzigianni Municipal Olive Press, now a Museum of Olive Oil. It preserves the traditional method of olive oil production, showcasing all the machinery used since the 19th century.
