Milies is one of the most picturesque villages of Pelion, boasting a rich historical heritage. This beautiful mountainous village is built at an altitude of 400 m, located 28 km from Volos, and is one of Pelion¢s most popular destinations.
Here, the beauty of Pelion meets tourism development in a harmonious way that respects nature and creates a wonderful result. The settlement of Milies, with its old houses and mansions that stand out for their Pelion architecture, is perfect for unique strolls along its stone-paved streets.
Milies is the birthplace of Anthimos Gazis and Grigorios Konstantas, who founded the “Psychis Akos” school, also known as the Milies School, in 1814. This school became a vital intellectual center in the region and a hub of the liberation struggle during Ottoman rule. Additionally, in May 1821, the Thessaly uprising against the Turks was proclaimed here by Anthimos Gazis.
During your stay in Milies, it is worth visiting the Church of the Archangels, located in the village square, dating back to 1741.
Do not miss the old library, which houses rare documents, records of the Greek Revolution, books, maps, and old instruments of physics and chemistry. Among these precious artifacts, the founding charter of the Milies School stands out, in which Gazis, Konstantas, and Filippidis contributed 500 gold coins for the construction of the school.
Be sure to visit the Milies Railway Station, where the Pelion train (the charming “Moutzouris”) terminates. Construction of this major project began in 1895 by the Italian engineer Evaristo De Chirico, father of the famous painter Giorgio De Chirico. With great knowledge and imagination, Evaristo designed and built one of the most beautiful railway lines. Its original length from Volos to Milies was 29 km. Today, only 16 km are in use, from Lechonia to Milies.
This journey on the “Moutzouris,” passing by two-arched, three-arched, or even four-arched bridges amid lush slopes, is truly unforgettable.
If you want to swim, visit Koropi Beach, just a few kilometers from Milies. It is one of the largest beaches in the Pagasetic Gulf, with crystal-clear, tranquil waters.
In Milies, traditional guesthouses provide comfortable accommodation in a stunning environment.
