Kato & ano lexonia
 |
Just past Agria and crossing the historic Vrychon Bridge, considered the first reinforced concrete bridge built in Greece in 1917, you will encounter the two charming villages of Ano and Kato Lechonia. They are built along the coastal strip of the Pagasetic Gulf, surrounded by fertile plains filled with flower gardens and orchards.
Today, Lechonia functions as a suburb of Volos. In particular, Ano Lechonia, which serves as the seat of the Municipality of Artemis, is famous for its nurseries. The village is immersed in greenery, with its lands covered in flowers and ornamental plants.
A notable feature of the settlements is the old tower houses preserved from the Ottoman era and the neoclassical buildings that reflect a period of economic prosperity in the area.
In Kato Lechonia, it is worth visiting the Church of Agios Georgios and taking a stroll along the Hatzivangelis and Karnagio coasts, where you can swim and enjoy local tavern cuisine.
In Ano Lechonia, you will see the towers of Olympios and Kokoslis, which are fairly well-preserved, as well as the neoclassical mansions of Kontos, Kassiopoulos, Bakalis, Chatzistamatiou, and Chatzikyriazis, the ice factory of Dimopoulos, and the olive press of Georgoudis. You will also find the station for the Pelion train, which today serves as the starting point for the route to Milies.
Near Ano Lechonia, ruins of the acropolis of ancient Methone have been identified on a nearby hill.
