Heading up the main road toward Pelion, you will encounter the famous Ano Voliotika villages. At their entrance stands the statue of Chiron the Centaur, guiding visitors toward the mythical mountain of the Centaurs. These small villages of Ano Volos are distinguished by their traditional manor houses, nestled within lush greenery.
In the village of Anakasia, you can visit the Theofilos Museum, housed in the home of Giannis Kontos. Its walls are adorned with paintings by the renowned artist Theofilos Chatzimichail, who famously decorated homes and shops in exchange for a simple meal.
It is also worth visiting the Metropolitan Church of Saint John the Baptist, which, despite suffering significant damage during the Ottoman era and the 1955 earthquake, still stands majestically with its impressive bell tower.
In Ano Volos, you should also see the Church of Panagia ton Eisodion, affectionately called “Panagitsa” by locals, where you can admire the exquisite stone carvings, as well as the Church of Agia Triada in the village¢s picturesque square.
The pine-covered hill of Episkopi dominates the area, from which a cobbled path leads to the three-aisled basilica of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, dating back to 1639. During the Byzantine period, a monastery once stood at the top of the hill, surrounded by several chapels, the ruins of which remain visible today.
