Drakeia is one of the most remarkable villages of Western Pelion, perfect for those seeking rest and tranquility amidst nature. Located just 6 km from Agria, the village is built amphitheatrically at an altitude of 500 m. It was founded in the mid-15th century by stone craftsmen from Epirus. Drakeia is renowned for its lush vegetation and numerous chestnut trees that adorn and beautify the village. In the 19th century, it was one of the largest villages in Pelion and experienced significant economic prosperity. Most of the houses are exemplary examples of traditional Pelion architecture.
A tragic event earned Drakeia the title of a “Martyred Village.” On December 18, 1943, German occupiers executed 118 residents. The monument commemorating the victims, inscribed with the names of all who lost their lives, serves as a reminder to the older generations and a lesson for the younger ones about the events that marked this small community.
During your stay in Drakeia, you can enjoy leisurely walks along the picturesque cobbled streets with flowing streams and dense vegetation, and relax in the village square while savoring local cuisine. Be sure to visit historic mansions, such as the Triantafyllou Mansion, adorned with 18th-century murals, intricately carved doors, and impressive wooden ceilings.
For hiking enthusiasts, a scenic trail starts from Drakeia and leads to Chania. The route offers breathtaking views of the lush greenery, and the stunning panorama will reward you for choosing this path.
