Lesvos has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age. Recognized for the great economical and cultural accomplishments during Antiquity. In 1523 the Monastery of Limonas was built. Famous for the prominent lyric poets as Sapfo and Alkeos, philosophers as Pittakos and other distinguished personalities of literature and science that lived and created in the island. The green island of harmony and beauty is situated in the eastern Aegean sea. It is the third in extent greek island of 1.630 sq.km and in a distance of 188 n.m. from Piraeus (12 hours). Capital and harbour as well is Mytilene, a mix of old and new characteristics. It is a town with long history that impresses the visitors with its imposing buildings, the mansions and the castle at the top of the pine-wood, built on ancient ruins. In the town there are marvellous mansions and buildings in new-classical style, museums, collections and exhibitions. Of particular importance they are mentioned the Archeological Museum, the Museum of Popular Art, the Traditional House of Marika Vlahou. In Varia, there is the Museum of Theophilos where you can enjoy the works of the painter. There is also the Museum of Modern Art, near the Museum of Theophilos, that includes paintings of Picasso, Matis, Sagal, Le Corbigier, Rouau, Leger, Tsarouhis and others. Thermi, a beautiful, traditional village in a green landscape is at a distance of 11 km. from Mytilene. Here, situated in the green hill of Karies is found the Monastery of St.Rafail. In Pyrghi of Thermi they are located old imposing towers, with the architectural characteristics of the island that are inhabited still today. Do visit the towers of Goutoglou, Hadouli and Aggelatou, the byzantine small church of Panaghia Trouloti, the church of Panaghia Faneromeni as well as ruins of the Pre-historical Thermi in the region Kanoni. In the location Beach of Thermi there are curative sources. Towards the western side of the capital, at a distance of 89 km. it is situated Eressos of extraordinary beauty, home-land of Sapfo and Theophrastos, with the coastal region of Scala Eressos. Sightseeing of the area are the prehellenic gate over the hill, the ruins of the two towers and the Roman basin. In Xokastro it was located the ancient city. Remarkable exhibits are hosted in the Archeological Museum of Eressos. In a small distance from the village Sigri is located the Petrified Forest which impresses with the width of their trunks and the apparent outline of the roots, the crust and the details of the trees. It was created 16 to 22 million years ago and it is considered as one of the most amazing globally Monuments of our Geological Inheritance.
