Mantamados

The traditional village of Mantamados is located 36 km from Mytilene.
It is a religious center of the island, as it is home to the famous Monastery of Taxiarchis, the patron saint of Lesvos. The monastery was built in 1700, and inside it is kept the miraculous icon of the saint. According to local tradition, the icon was made from clay and blood by the only monk who survived the Saracen raid, during which all the other monks were killed.
As you explore the village, you will admire the traditional architecture and the beautiful surroundings. It is worth visiting the renovated 19th-century olive press, a characteristic example of industrial architecture, which now houses the Cultural Center.
The kindness and hospitality of the locals will leave a lasting impression. Be sure to purchase ceramics and woodcarvings from the workshops operating in Mantamados. These crafts have a long tradition in the area, and the artisans create true masterpieces.
For swimming, you can visit the beaches of Agios Stefanos, Aspropotamos, and Tsonia. A few kilometers outside the village, you will find the tiny villages of Kapi and Kleio, where the ruins of a Byzantine fortress are preserved.
