Antissa is a beautiful town built around the slope of a mountain.
It is located on the western side of the island, 76 km from the capital.
This area has great historical significance for Lesvos, as it was the site of the ancient city of the same name and one of the first Aeolic settlements on the island.
According to mythology, the waves washed ashore Orpheus¢ lyre and head on the beach of Antissa after he was killed by the Maenads.
Local tradition also states that the ruins of the ancient city, destroyed by the Romans, lie beneath the sea.
Among the area¢s landmarks, the Monastery of Ypsilou stands out, founded in the early 11th century.
It is built on the crater of a volcano – extinct since ancient times – and offers breathtaking views.
Inside the monastery are preserved rare ecclesiastical manuscripts and the vestments of Patriarch Gregory V, who was tortured by the Turks.
The port of Antissa is Gavathas, a dreamy beach also ideal for fishing.
Nearby tavernas serve traditional local dishes.
In Antissa, there are hotels and rental rooms available for visitors.
