The capital of the prefecture, the picturesque Nauplia, one of the most beautiful cities of Greece, is in a distance of 148 km. from Athens. The famous castle Palamidi, Akronaflia and the islet-fortress Bourtzi in the entry of the harbour, decorate the city. There are many sightseeing in Nauplia as the Military School (today War Museum), the Library, the Town Hall, the Municipal Theater, the statue of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the churches of St Spyridonas, St. George and others, the Archaeological, the Popular Art and the War Museum. Places to swim in Nauplia are the marvellous beaches of Arvanitia and Karathona. 29 km. east of Nauplia there is the archaeological site of Epidaurus with the best preserved theater of antiquity (3rd B.C. century), the miracle of Epidaurus as it was called, built in a forest. Old - Ancient Epidaurus is a village by the sea built in a picturesque bay and in a plain full of olive trees and orange trees. You can visit the Small Theater of Ancient Epidaurus, of the 4th B.C. century dedicated to Dionyssos. 7 km. to the north, on the foot of the mountain Akros it is situated Nea Epidaurus. Here in 1821 it took place the A’ National Assembly of Greeks. A few kilometres to the north there is the monastery of Agnoundos. Amphitheatrically built in the hill of Aghia Anna it is to be found Kranidi, 75 km. southeast of Nauplia. It has traditional houses, churches, monasteries appearing from the hill. For swimming you can go to the beaches Galini and Doroufi. Ermioni with its islander’s style and the two windmills located in the harbour is a picturesque country town. In the region Bisti with the pinewood they are saved ruins of the temple of Possidonas. For swimming you can go to Mandrakia and Petrothalassa. 12 km. east of Nauplia it is located the enchanting Tolo, one of the most famous touristic summer resorts of Greece. In a steep cliff northeast of Tolo there are ruins of the ancient acropole of Assini. Facing Tolo there are situated the islets Koronissi, Romvi, Daskalio. In the latter it is also to be found the chapel of Panaghia Zoodohos Pighi built in 1688. For swimming you can go to the beach of the village and to the islet Romvi by boat. The picturesque village Drepano is built in a region with rich vegetation. For swimming there are the beaches Plaka, Vivari, Aghios Nikolaos. Big summer resort built in an enclosed shelterd from wind bay is Porto Heli. It is situated in an area with enough vegetation, it has sufficient touristic infrastructure, while its natural port is full of yaghts in summer. In the region southwards of Porto Heli there are remnants of the ancient city of Alieon, a sunk city that historically had worthwhile development. You can enjoy swimming in the sandy beaches of the region with the clear blue sea and to the small bays of Aghios Aemilianos with its chapel.
