Lygourio is one of the largest towns in the Argolis region and experiences significant tourist activity, especially during the summer months. It is located 25 km northeast of Nafplio and attracts many visitors due to its location on the road to the ancient theater of Epidaurus and the important archaeological sites in the area.
Lygourio serves as the seat of the Municipality of Asklipieio. Built at the foothills of Mount Arachnaio, it impresses visitors with its unique natural beauty. The lush landscapes combined with the region¢s rich history make Lygourio a town of exceptional value.
The attractions of the area reflect aspects of its long and significant history. At the highest point of Lygourio, you can see the remnants of the walls of Ancient Lessa. Additionally, it is worth visiting the Mycenaean bridge outside the village of Arkadiko, the ruins of the ancient Pyramid near the Church of Agia Marina, and the ancient walking trail connecting the Sanctuary of Asclepius to Lygourio and Epidaurus.
During your visit, you will notice numerous churches and chapels—around 300 in total. According to local tradition, Lygourio and the surrounding settlements were surrounded by temples to protect residents from enemies and invaders.
Lygourio is also home to the Natural History Museum, established in 1993. The museum highlights the mineral, paleontological, and natural wealth of Greece through its extensive and rare exhibits. Among its impressive collections are fossilized tree trunks, corals, fish, and complete ammonite collections dating from 235 to 241 million years ago from the Asklipieio region. Particularly striking is the collection of handmade geological maps.
Situated in the shadow of the ancient theater of Epidaurus, Lygourio has developed a rich cultural life. Throughout the year, cultural events are held, and during the Epidaurus Festival, the town becomes a focal point for visitors. More than 1,000,000 people attend the Sanctuary of Asclepius and the Ancient Theater to watch performances of ancient drama, many of whom stay in Lygourio.
In Lygourio, you will find hotels and rental accommodations. There are also taverns, restaurants, and cafés to enjoy local cuisine and hospitality.
