GREECE / PELOPONNESE / ARGOLIDA / NEA TYRINTHA
Nea tyrintha
A region of immense historical and mythological significance. It is located in the middle of the fertile valley north of Nafplio, at a distance of 7 km from the town.
It was one of the most important Mycenaean cities—after Mycenae—and according to archaeological findings, it has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age.
The historian Pausanias mentions that ancient Tiryns was founded by the Cyclopes, who built the city’s Acropolis using enormous boulders. The famous Cyclopean Walls, parts of which survive to this day, with their massive size and the difficulty of their construction for the time, reinforced this mythical tradition. The ancients believed they were created by beings with supernatural powers. The central gate of the Acropolis is similar to the Lion Gate of Mycenae, though without the lintel.
The Early Helladic construction of ancient Tiryns consists of concentric stone circles and an extensive system of tunnels carved into the rock, which converge. In the archaeological site, you can also see the ruins of the palace and part of the throne room.
Beyond its historical and archaeological importance, New Tiryns is also appealing for visitors to the Argolic region. It is a modern settlement suitable for a peaceful stay and serves as a starting point for excursions throughout the wider area. It is worth climbing Prophet Elias Hill to enjoy the view over the Argolic plain.
