Klitoria

Kleitoria is a beautiful town in southeastern Achaia and serves as the seat of the municipality of the same name. It is built in a stunning location at an altitude of 550 meters on the western side of the Aroanios River valley.
The region of Kleitoria is rich in mythological references and has a particularly abundant history. Since 1830, Kleitoria has been an important commercial center for the wider area. Due to its geographical location, it also served as a transportation hub for the surrounding villages of the region.
The town experienced a period of significant economic prosperity, which is reflected in the remaining buildings of local crafts, water mills, and more.
Architecturally, Kleitoria follows the typical style of central Peloponnese, without notable peculiarities. Various architectural, folkloric, and craft monuments are preserved, including old stone-built churches, arched bridges from the Ottoman era, and traditional fountains.
A short distance from Kleitoria, along the road to Kalavryta, lies the famous mythical Cave of the Lakes. It is a rare natural creation. In addition to its labyrinthine corridors, mysterious passages, and unique stalactite formations, the Cave of the Lakes is remarkable for its uniqueness, as it extends over multiple tiered lakes across three levels, making it one of its kind in the world.
The cave was once the bed of an underground river, with an explored length of 1,980 meters. In spring, when the snow melts, the cave transforms into an underground river with natural waterfalls. During the summer months, part of the cave dries out, revealing original lace-like stone basins and dams up to 4 meters high. The remaining part of the cave permanently holds water in about 13 natural lakes.
