The picturesque village of Trypi is located just 9 km from Sparta, in a naturally gifted area of unique beauty. It is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Taygetus at an altitude of 840 meters.
According to tradition, the village owes its name to the fact that it serves as a passage – a “hole” – to the neighboring region of Messinia, facilitating travel from ancient times to the present day. Due to its location and privileged geographical position, Trypi has historically been an important intellectual center of the area.
Visitors to Laconia who explore Trypi can enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Karvasaras and Vasiloneri springs. They will also admire the Byzantine churches of Saints Theodoroi and the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, as well as the now-ruined Monastery of Saint John the Baptist, nestled among a lush grove of plane trees.
For those wishing to continue their journey into the neighboring region of Messinia, the exit of Trypi offers sights such as the famous Kaiadas, the Lagkada Gorge with its eagle nests, the climbing center of Lagkada, and the tunnel on the Sparta–Kalamata National Road, constructed in the last century to improve connectivity between the two regions.
