Pyrgi
 |
Pyrgi is one of the most famous villages of Chios. It is a medieval village that stands out from others of its kind due to the unique decoration of its houses¢ façades.
The village is built according to medieval standards, with narrow cobblestone streets, arches, and passages connecting the facing houses. But Pyrgi has a feature found nowhere else: the so-called “xysta” or painted houses. This is a special technique in which the outer layer of the houses¢ plaster is painted white. Geometric patterns such as triangles, diamonds, circles, squares, etc., are then etched into it and painted in vibrant colors. Notably, even the village church is decorated in this manner.
Pyrgi is located on the southern side of Chios, like all the medieval villages, and 25 km from the island¢s capital. The houses are built around a square tower, the ruins of which lie at the center of the settlement. The village takes its name from this tower.
