The heart of Chios beats in its capital, Chios Town, or “Chora” as the locals call it. Here is also the island¢s main port. The town is built on the eastern side of the island, facing the coast of Asia Minor, on the same site where the ancient city once thrived, of which only a few traces of the walls remain. This ancient Ionian city was one of the greatest naval powers in antiquity.
Exploring the town offers many pleasant surprises. Every alley has a story, every building holds a memory that transports you through time…
At the northern part of the harbor stands the Byzantine Castle, founded in the 10th century and later expanded by the Genoese and the Turks. Inside the castle, you can see the Church of Saint George. It also houses the tomb of Kara-Ali, who ordered the great massacre of 1822.
As you wander through the town, you will see the old neighborhoods, whose traditional architecture captivates every visitor. In the alleys of the old quarter, the past meets the present. Stone buildings, neoclassical mansions, and the bustling market with the aroma of mastic will leave an unforgettable impression.
The town also offers numerous attractions worth visiting. Plan your visit to the museums—the Archaeological, Byzantine, and Folklore Museums—as well as the Korais Library and the Homeriï Cultural Center, which is at the heart of the island¢s cultural life.
Near Chios Town, there are two organized beaches, the Municipal Beach and Kontari, offering all modern amenities for swimmers.
At Vounaki Square, you can enjoy a coffee and try the famous “Ypovruchio” dessert, flavored with Chios mastic. Nightlife options are diverse, catering to all tastes.
Chora has many hotels and rental rooms to suit every budget.
Do not miss the opportunity to buy traditional products made from Chios mastic in the town¢s market—chewing gum, spoon sweets, and liqueurs—as well as baked sweets and almond treats. For gifts, consider local ceramics, as pottery has been a centuries-old tradition on the island.
