Kambos
 |
The lowland area that stretches along the southern side of the town, known as Kampos, is distinguished by its unique natural beauty and, above all, by its aristocratic character.
It is an extensive plain, much of which is cultivated with citrus groves, including orange, mandarin, bitter orange, and lemon trees.
The landscape of Kampos is truly unique among the Aegean islands.
A major role in this is played by the famous mansions of Kampos, which give the area its distinct identity. They are exceptional examples of a unique architectural style not found elsewhere in Greece. These imposing mansions belonged to the aristocratic families of Chios and to noble Genoese families who once lived on the island. Many of these mansions were built during the 14th century. Behind the tall protective walls lies an entire microcosm. Each estate is a sight to behold. What should one admire first? The huge arched courtyard gates adorned with coats of arms and colorful designs? The wine presses that decorate the courtyards? The stone houses (built with Thymiana stone) featuring mosaic floors and elaborate marble decorations? These are images from another era, carried into the present to capture the gaze of visitors and earn their endless admiration.
This is Kampos, with its medieval architecture and unparalleled charm.
