GREECE / PELOPONNESE / ARKADIA / DIMITSANA
Dimitsana
Dimitsana is a picturesque town in Arcadia, closely linked to the Greek War of Independence of 1821, as it was home to the country¢s largest gunpowder mill.
It is located 59 km northwest of Tripoli and is built at an altitude of 1,000 m, spreading across two opposing hills. Dimitsana has been declared a traditional settlement and is one of the most beautiful places in the Peloponnese, offering views over the Megalopolis plain, the breathtaking gorge and valley of the Lousios River, and the snow-capped peaks of Mount Taygetos.
The town is characterized by its traditional stone houses with tiled roofs and wooden balconies, creating the quintessential image of a Greek mountain village.

Dimitsana holds legendary importance in Peloponnesian history and its contribution to the nation during the 1821 Revolution. Throughout the Revolution, Dimitsana served as the most important gunpowder supply center. The famous Greek general Theodoros Kolokotronis wrote: “We had gunpowder, thanks to Dimitsana. The matter of the gunpowder was in the hands of the Spiliotopoulos brothers, and to work the gunpowder we brought Dimitsanites into the camp.”
This legendary tradition of gunpowder production ceased only a few years ago. Dimitsana was also the birthplace of Patriarch Gregory V and Paleon Patron Germanos, whose houses are still preserved. The Spiliotopoulos family home, which ran 14 gunpowder mills, also survives.

The town stands on the site of the ancient city of Teuthis, where remnants of walls and medieval structures can still be found, as the town flourished until the Ottoman period. From 1764, a renowned school operated here, playing a key role in awakening national consciousness. One of its students was Patriarch Gregory V; his house was restored in 1991 and now houses the Ecclesiastical Museum.

Key sights include the historic gunpowder mills, which remain an emblem of Dimitsana¢s revolutionary past. Another highlight is the Dimitsana Library, whose books were read by patriarchs and bishops, initially at the secret school of the Philosopher Monastery and later at the Dimitsana School. While few books from that period survive, rare editions and a rich collection of historical records remain. The library also functions as a museum, housing archaeological finds from local excavations and a folklore collection with textiles and traditional crafts.

Do not miss visiting the Philosopher Monastery, one of Greece¢s most significant monastic complexes. It consists of two sections: the Old and the New Monastery.
The **Old Monastery of Philosopher**, founded in 967, is perched on a towering cliff along the western bank of the Lousios River, occupying a natural cavity 128 m long and 0.6–8 m wide. The complex includes a two-story building, the katholikon, cells, and auxiliary rooms, with cisterns for water storage. A clay-pipe aqueduct brought water from a spring above the cliff. The katholikon, built in the form of a tetrastyle cross with an octagonal dome, is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The remaining frescoes impress with their expressive forms, restrained color palette, and spiritual solemnity, making it one of the finest monuments of Byzantine art. Access to the Old Monastery is via a path starting from the New Monastery, passing by the old site, crossing the bridge over the Lousios, and leading to the Prodromos Monastery.
The **New Monastery of Philosopher** was founded in the late 18th century. In 1764, the school that operated within the monastery moved to Dimitsana. Following periods of unrest and decline, the monastery merged with the Dimitsana School in 1816, and its revenues were used to support the school. The monastery was eventually abandoned but restored gradually from 1990. It celebrates the Dormition of the Virgin Mary on August 23.

For nature lovers, the trail along the Lousios River offers breathtaking landscapes rich in history. Along the way, you can also visit the Water Power Museum at the Saint John spring in the Lousios gorge, highlighting the region¢s traditional water-powered technologies.
