The village of Tropaia is a beautiful mountain settlement in Gortynia, built amphitheatrically at an altitude of 750 meters on the slopes of Mount Agios Dimitrios. It is one of the most picturesque main villages of the area and serves as the seat of the municipality of the same name.
A defining feature of the settlement is its traditional stone-built houses and its magnificent views, as Tropaia is surrounded by dense vegetation.
The area has a long and rich history. According to archaeological findings, the ancient city of Thelpousa once stood very close to the village, and ruins of buildings, a water reservoir, and fortification walls have been preserved.
Additionally, near Tropaia, about 3 km southeast of the village and between the villages of Galatas and Vyziki, lie the ruins of the Frankish Castle of Akova, dating back to the 13th century. It was the seat of one of the baronies of the Principality of the Peloponnese. This barony, one of the most powerful in the region, was established after the capture of Constantinople by the Crusaders and is notable for having been ruled by women for many years.
During the Greek War of Independence, Akova formed a distinct military district together with the neighboring area of Pera Meria. Today, sections of the outer walls and towers of the castle are still preserved.
In Tropaia, a small number of hotels and rented rooms operate, offering comfortable accommodation. It is an ideal destination for rest and relaxation at any time of the year.
If you visit during the summer, it is well worth attending the theatrical festival held at the fortress of Akova.
