Zarouchla is a small, picturesque village in Achaia that impresses visitors with its traditional architecture and lush green surroundings. It is located approximately 35 km from Akrata and 18 km from the Chelmos Ski Center.
Administratively, it belongs to the Municipality of Akrata.
Zarouchla is a village surrounded by greenery. It is abundant with walnut, apple, and cherry trees. Just one kilometer from the outskirts of the village begins the beautiful Zarouchla forest, covering approximately 20,000 acres of firs and pines. A characteristic feature of the settlement is its stone houses. The village is built on the slopes of Mount Chelmos, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, offering stunning views of the enchanting natural landscape.
Historically, during the Ottoman period, Zarouchla reached great prosperity, with around a thousand families living there. However, the mountainous terrain forced most of the residents to move down to the plains of the wider region.
While exploring the village, you will encounter noteworthy churches of historical significance, such as those of Taxiarches, Panagia, and Agia Triada. The latter were founded in the 12th or 13th century AD. They feature Byzantine architecture, with exquisite frescoes that have been preserved in remarkably good condition. Equally important for the area¢s history are the towers of Fotilas and of Sotiris Charalampis, the Supreme Commander of the weapons in the Kalavryta region during 1821.
The village offers guesthouses and tavernas where you can enjoy traditional dishes. For evening entertainment, Zarouchla has café bars playing both Greek and international music.
