Kato Achaia is the most important commercial and agricultural center of western Achaia. It is built on the western side of the Gulf of Patras, close to the sea, and is located 22 kilometers southwest of Patras.
It is a beautiful and distinctive area that attracts visitors from across the region thanks to the unique variety of its landscapes. Kato Achaia, which is also the seat of the Dymi municipality, is rightly considered one of the most charming towns of Western Achaia.
The area is characterized by its rich variety of landscapes. Notable highlights include Kalogria Beach, with its stunning golden sand and deep blue waters, as well as the Strofylia pine forest, renowned for its idyllic scenery.
Additionally, Papa Lake and the Prokopos wetland are of significant ecological and scientific interest.
The region also has archaeological significance, as historical sources indicate that the ancient city of Dyme once flourished where Kato Achaia now stands. Dyme was a member of the Achaean League.
Near Araxos, the remains of an important fortress of ancient Dyme, known as the Dymaion Wall, were discovered. This fortress, also called the Castle of Kalogria, was built during the Mycenaean period.
Furthermore, excavations at Chaladritsa, specifically at the site called Portes, revealed parts of Mycenaean tombs.
