The traditional village of Vissani is located 54 km from Ioannina and is built at an altitude of 750 m. It belongs administratively to the municipality of Delvinaki.
According to historical records, the village was founded in the 14th century and experienced significant prosperity. Especially during the Ottoman period, it served as the capital of the Pogoni region and was a spiritual and cultural center for the wider area.
The houses in the village were built by Epirus craftsmen following traditional Epirus architecture, reflecting the economic prosperity the village once enjoyed. They were usually constructed within a paved courtyard, and the main entrance had a wooden door with a double-pitched roof. Many of these houses have been preserved to this day.
It is worth noting that Vissani had a functioning school before 1770, and it is said that Ali Pasha also studied there.
Just 2 km from the village, in a lush area filled with plane trees, lies the Holy Monastery of Abel, which was founded in the 10th century.
