Alonistaina is a stunning village nestled in the heart of Mainalo. It is located 25 km from Tripoli and 10 km from Vytina, on the western side of Ostrakina, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, in a small valley between Vytina and Piana.
The village, which has preserved its traditional character, has been declared a protected settlement. Beyond its architecture, it impresses with its natural beauty. Surrounded by fir trees and spread across a lush green gorge, it resembles a living painting.
Exploring the village is a true delight. Stone renovations enhance the streets and surroundings, while the village square features the marble monument of Zampia Kostaki, the mother of Theodoros Kolokotronis, who hailed from Alonistaina.
Among the village¢s attractions is the single-aisle Basilica of Saint Paraskevi, dating back to 1742. Next to the church entrance lies the tomb of Zampia Kostaki.
Alonistaina played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and is closely linked to the Kolokotronis family, serving as a strategic base during the Revolution. Notably, it was the birthplace of Theodoros Kolokotronis¢ mother, Zampia Kostaki.
Before the revolution, it was a refuge and base for the klephts, while during the 1821 uprising it became a gathering and launching point for Greek forces under Theodoros Kolokotronis. The village was burned and looted by the Ottomans twice during the conflict.
