Magouliana
 |
Magouliana is a lush, green village of mountainous Arcadia. It is built on a slope of Mount Mainalo at an altitude of 1,360 m and is the highest village in the Peloponnese.
A distinctive feature of the area is that it is surrounded by a beautiful, dense fir forest. The settlement is built on the crest of a large natural curve and unfolds amphitheatrically along the mountainside.
It is located 12 km west of Vytina and 58 km from Tripoli.
Magouliana is a picturesque village with stone-built houses, representative examples of traditional architecture, which add their own charm to the stunning overall landscape.
On the hill above the village stands the Byzantine Castle of Magouliana.
The village is also home to noteworthy churches worth visiting. The most remarkable is the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, dating back to the 17th century. The church features an exceptional carved wooden iconostasis, considered one of the finest in Europe, along with intricate gilded icons. The iconostasis is the work of the Epirus master craftsman Christodoulos.
It was created using the so-called “pierced” carving technique, leaving open spaces between the carved motifs, which mainly depict relief scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
