Astros is a well-organized town in the region of Kynouria. It serves as the seat of the Municipality of North Kynouria and acts as the commercial and administrative center of the wider area. Located 45 km from Tripoli, it lies in the lush olive-covered plain of Thyrea. The coastal settlement of Paralio Astros, just 4 km away, is famous for its beautiful sandy beach.
Astros has played a significant role in modern Greek history. In April 1823, it hosted the Second National Assembly of the Greeks, which took place in the garden and surrounding area of the renowned Korytsioti School. The school building is a beautiful neoclassical structure that has been designated a protected monument. Today, it houses the Archaeological Museum, featuring notable findings from excavations across Kynouria, including artifacts from the villa of Herodes Atticus discovered in the area of the ancient city of Eva.
During your visit, it is worth exploring the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, also known as Loukos, which was founded in the 12th century. This significant religious monument is distinguished by its octagonal dome. Noteworthy features include embedded Late Roman sculptures, carvings in the monastery¢s courtyard, and a small library that preserves important historical records and manuscripts. A 4th-century BCE relief depicting Asclepius and his family was also found here.
