Elassona is located in the Larissa region, 42 km northwest of the city. It is a beautiful, picturesque town nestled on the slopes of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.
The town is crossed by the Elassonitis River, which joins the Titarisios River and flows into the Pineios, the largest river in Thessaly.
The river divides the town into two parts: the old town, built at the foothills of the Olympiotissa hill, known as Varosi, and the new town, which spreads along the right bank of the river. The two parts of the town are connected by three bridges and a traditional stone arched bridge, which is also one of the main landmarks of Elassona.
Dominating the town and the entire Elassona plain is the Monastery of Panagia Olympiotissa, founded in the 13th century by Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos. It is the most recognizable landmark of the town and the most important monument in the wider area, notable for its impressive frescoes and precious religious relics.
In Elassona, you will find many hotels and guesthouses offering comfortable accommodation. The local taverns serve delicious traditional cuisine, providing a true taste of the region.
