Mesta
 |
Mesta is the most impressive medieval village of Chios. It is located in the southwestern part of the island, 35 km from Chios Town, and has been designated a protected medieval monument. This beautiful castle-village is built in such a way that the houses form a natural fortification. Exploring the village is a unique experience. The narrow cobbled streets with arches and vaults connecting the opposite houses like bridges, the stone fortifications, and the intricate architectural layout of the settlement impress every visitor. It is easy to get lost in the village¢s alleys, but the excellent signage helps “foreigners” find the entrances and exits of Mesta.
The passage of time has left this beauty untouched, and the residents, through their care and the restoration work they carry out periodically, have contributed to preserving this rare and noble village.
It is worth visiting the Church of the Archangel Michael, the largest in the village, adorned with hundreds of votive offerings, as well as the Church of the Little or Old Archangel, which features an elaborate wooden iconostasis from 1833.
About 5 km from Mesta is the port of Mesta, one of the area¢s most scenic spots. This enclosed bay pleasantly surprises visitors as it emerges between the surrounding hills. The moored fishing boats add their own touch of charm to the area. Besides enjoying a swim, you can savor fresh fish and traditional delicacies at the seaside taverns, accompanied by the excellent local wine.
