Anavatos
 |
The abandoned village of Anavatos is built on a steep hill at an altitude of 400 meters, and access to it is quite difficult, possible only from its northern side. It is located 30 km from the town, on the western side of the island. The view it offers is truly impressive. The imposing stone buildings, which have withstood the test of time, demonstrate how durable stone can be. They protected many generations and now, through the ruins of the past, reveal aspects of the island¢s history and earn admiration for their rare craftsmanship.
The village is built on a massive rugged rock that serves as a natural protective wall. Anavatos can be explored only from its northern side, and most of the village¢s streets are actually stairs. It was a refuge for the fighters of 1822.
Today, it stands as a site of unique significance and is ideal for walking tours.
