The beautiful town of Vrontados is one of the most touristic areas of Chios. It is built on the plains that form a natural continuation of Chios Town, from which it is only 4 km away. A landmark of Vrontados is the statue of the “Unknown Sailor,” located on the coastal road in front of the town hall. Another distinctive feature is the three windmills along the seafront. Built of stone, they are the most photographed sights in the area.
The village is constructed according to traditional architectural standards. It is worth strolling through its neighborhoods to admire the island¢s distinctive architecture.
During your visit to Vrontados, you will also see the famous Daskalopetra or “Homer¢s Rock.” This large flat rock shows traces of ancient seating. Local tradition holds that Homer taught his poems here, though historical sources suggest it may have been the remains of the temple of Cybele or Rhea.
Other notable sites include the tomb of the writer Yiannis Psychari and the Monastery of Panagia Mersinidi, which preserves the vestments of Patriarch Gregory V.
For swimming, the Daskalopetra beach on the northern coast of Chios is highly recommended. It is popular for its white pebbles. A few hundred meters away is the bay of Lo, which appears as a natural continuation of Daskalopetra. This beach has been awarded the European Blue Flag, is well-organized, exceptionally clean, and ideal for water sports. Note that it is the only beach in Chios with an entrance fee.
Vrontados also hosts many traditional customs. One of the most famous is the “Rocket War,” which takes place on the night of Easter. This custom, rooted in the Ottoman period, divides the locals due to its dangerous nature. The firing of rockets, fireworks, and firecrackers creates a spectacular show but has historically caused accidents.
Vrontados and Daskalopetra have many hotels and rental apartments. The proximity to Chios Town has also encouraged the development of vibrant nightlife in the area. It¢s worth exploring!
