Voula
 |
Voula is a coastal suburb of southern Attica, located just 20 km from the center of Athens. It is one of the capital¢s most beloved and bustling areas. The two fully organized beaches, maintained by the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT), are major attractions. On their sandy shores, visitors of all ages enjoy the Attic sun and the pristine waters.
The area of Voula has been continuously inhabited since ancient times. Throughout history and up until the early 20th century, it retained a predominantly agricultural character.
After the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the rapid population growth in Athens, Voula gradually lost its rural character and transformed into a modern town. In 1920, the famous Voula Asklipieio hospital was founded, initially dedicated to treating tuberculosis, which significantly contributed to the area¢s development. In the 1930s, the activities of PIKPA also began, providing extensive social services over the following decades.
Following World War II, the rapid expansion of Athens and broader socio-economic changes accelerated the growth of coastal settlements. Many of these evolved from summer resorts into prestigious suburbs, including Voula, which today is home to numerous prominent Athenians.
