The city of Heraklion is the capital of the Heraklion region and of Crete. It is the largest urban center on the island. Built at the northern edge of the region, the city has experienced many conquerors throughout its long history, with periods of prosperity and decline leaving their marks on its character.
Today, the city¢s architecture is particularly interesting for its contrasts. It uniquely combines the traditional with the modern, the old with the new. As you explore the city, you will see buildings from different historical periods standing side by side in a striking juxtaposition. Historic buildings, Venetian monuments, and modern architectural structures all coexist in this diverse city.
The city¢s character was largely shaped during the Venetian era. The Venetian harbor, with the Koules fortress at its entrance on the left side of today¢s port, sets the scene for the beauties visitors will encounter while exploring the city.
In the city center, the square with the Morosini Fountain, known as the famous Lions, is the most photographed landmark and the busiest meeting point for both locals and visitors.
Around the square, you will find many modern cafés as well as traditional coffee houses where you can taste the local specialty, bougatsa. The surrounding streets are bustling with commercial activity, featuring shops of all kinds. You can find both famous brand stores and traditional Cretan products.
Near the Morosini Fountain is the historic Church of Saint Mark, dating back to the 12th century. In the same area is the Venetian Loggia, a 16th-century building that now houses the city hall. The Church of Saint Titus, the island¢s patron saint, also dominates the area. Founded during the Byzantine period, it preserves the saint¢s skull.
A defining feature of the city is its Venetian walls, built in the 15th century. Important attractions include the bastions and the gates for entering and exiting the city. Of the seven bastions, the Martinengo Bastion stands out, as it houses the tomb of the writer Nikos Kazantzakis, who was not allowed to be buried in a cemetery due to his excommunication.
During your stay in Heraklion, besides exploring historic monuments, it is also worth visiting the museums (archaeological, historical, and more), which preserve true treasures of Crete¢s cultural heritage.
Music and dance have a deep-rooted history in Crete. Rhythm is in the Cretans¢ blood, evident in the way they speak and in the improvised mantinades they create on every occasion. Heraklion is naturally famous for its vibrant nightlife. The city offers a variety of options to suit all tastes: bars with Greek and international music, venues with live traditional music, as well as contemporary rhythms. And of course, in the city¢s restaurants, you can taste the exquisite recipes of Cretan cuisine.
The nearby beaches—Ammoudara, Amnisos, Linoperamata—offer a refreshing oasis after exploring the city.
Enjoy your stay in Heraklion and discover the unique beauty of the city and the entire region.
