Kasteli
 |
Located 35 km southeast of the city, Kasteli owes its name to the castle built by the Venetians, which no longer survives.
Kasteli has been inhabited since ancient times. Near the modern settlement, the ruins of the ancient city of Lyttos can be found. This was an important city founded by the Lacedaemonians and once dominated eastern Crete, but it was later destroyed by its rival, Knossos. During the Roman era, Kasteli regained its former strength.
Today, Kasteli is known for its rich agricultural production. The fertile lands of the region are covered with vineyards and olive groves.
