Myrina
 |
Myrina is the capital and the main port of the island. It is built on the same site as the ancient city of the same name. This area has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times.
The town stretches between two bays: the harbor and the Romaikos Yialos, at the center of which lies a small rocky peninsula topped by the imposing Castle. The view the city presents is exceptionally charming and unique.
A walk through the streets of the town is especially enjoyable. Its architecture harmoniously combines traditional, neoclassical, and modern elements. Buildings from different periods and styles stand side by side in a fascinating neighborhood, creating a beautiful collage of images. A short stroll through the town reveals both its past and present.
The Byzantine fortress serves as the town¢s waterfront landmark. It was built by Emperor Andronikos I Komnenos and acquired its current form after interventions by the Venetians in the mid-14th century.
During your visit to the town, you will encounter some of the island¢s most important landmarks, such as the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity with its characteristic marble bell towers, the Karatzadeio Library with a rich collection of rare editions, the Folklore Museum showcasing the cultural heritage of the area, and the Archaeological Museum, which houses finds from the prehistoric settlement of Poliochni.
The closest beaches to the town, known for their excellent organization and crystal-clear waters, are Myrina, Romaikos Yialos, Richa Nera, and Yialos Limaniou, all within walking distance. By car, you can also reach the beaches of Avlonas and Platy.
Thanous Beach is the most popular in the area, distinguished by its crystal-clear waters, beautiful sandy shore, and facilities for water sports and activities.
Four kilometers from Myrina, in the Therma area, you will find the famous thermal springs, visited annually by thousands of island visitors.
Myrina is the island¢s main tourist hub, featuring the most modern hotels, numerous restaurants, cafes, bars, and live music venues. There is also a summer cinema, and throughout the summer, the Municipality of Myrina organizes cultural events, including theatrical performances and concerts, which are worth attending.
