Souli

Souli, the heroic village of Thesprotia, is located 73 km from Igoumenitsa. It lies in a small plain atop a steep hill, with the settlement spreading at an altitude of 600 m above the bed of the Acheron River.
In 1956, Souli was declared a traditional preserved settlement. The new houses that have been built, and continue to be constructed in recent years, follow the model of traditional Epirus architecture under the supervision of the Byzantine Antiquities Authority of Ioannina.
The village has a well-known and significant history. The Souliotes resisted Ali Pasha, who eventually captured it after many battles. The sacrifice of the women, who, embracing their children, fled to Zalongo and leapt from the cliff—the famous Dance of Zalongo—to avoid falling into Turkish hands, is remembered as a heroic act and remains etched in the memory of all Greeks.
