Aggeliana is a municipal district of the Geropotamos Municipality.
Situated at an altitude of 90 meters and 23.5 km from Rethymno, it consists of the settlements Metochia tou Kampou and Sklopiana (or Sklipidiana). The community also includes the settlements Chanothiana (population 20, altitude 80 m) and Chani Alexandrou (population 64, altitude 63 m).
Aggeliana lies within the municipality of Mylopotamos, 24 km east of Rethymno, and has approximately 800 inhabitants. Geographically, it is the most fertile plain area in the region, known for producing olive oil, citrus fruits, and vegetables, while in the past it also produced large quantities of raisins. The village predates the Ottoman era, and its name is believed to derive from its first settler, Angelis, although some suggest it was a stopover point for messengers.
Today, the Aggeliana community includes the settlements of Sklopiana, Chanothiana, Alexandrou, and Dalambelo. The formerly separate settlements of Aggeliana and Metochia have now merged, as the central area hosts the church, the school, the community office, the cooperative olive press, and a number of newly built houses.
The discovery of a Late Minoan tomb confirms that settlements existed in the Aggeliana area as far back as the Minoan period.
