Spili
 |
Spili is a verdant mountain village located in the northwestern part of the region, 27 km from the city of Rethymno. It is rich in natural beauty, much of which remains largely undiscovered by tourism.
According to local tradition, Spili derives its name from the numerous caves found on Mount Voridis, where traces of ancient pathways have also been discovered.
A striking feature of the village is its abundant flowing water. In the village square, shaded by centuries-old plane trees, visitors are captivated by the famous fountain adorned with twenty-five lion heads, from which crystal-clear spring water flows.
