Southeast on the Argolic Peninsula lies a stunning town with a distinct island-like charm: Ermioni, one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the Peloponnese. It is an ideal vacation destination and a perfect base for exploring nearby attractions.
This picturesque fishing town has developed into a sought-after tourist destination thanks to its natural beauty. Nestled beside a pine-covered cape, Ermioni offers a beautiful sandy beach, numerous small harbors, and a history that spans millennia.
Ermioni is located 84 km from Nafplio and is also accessible by sea, with daily hydrofoil connections from Piraeus port.
Ancient Ermioni flourished in antiquity. At the site of Bisti, archaeological excavations have revealed significant finds, including the foundations of a temple dedicated to Poseidon. At Heliokastro, remains of the ancient city of Eileoi have been uncovered. Notably, the ancient historian Pausanias mentions this area as a place with sanctuaries of the Eleusinian Gods.
Historical artifacts have also been discovered in the courtyard of the local primary school, near the Metropolitan Church of Taxiarches, founded in the 17th century on the site of the ancient Temple of Demeter. Traces of the ancient roads are still visible around the church, which is also connected to events of the Greek Revolution of 1821.
A remarkable Byzantine monument is the Monastery of Saints Anargyroi, founded in the late 11th century, renowned for its Byzantine icons, impressive library, and gilded wooden iconostasis.
Ermioni is the seat of the municipality of the same name, which administratively includes the villages of Didyma, Thermisia, Heliokastro, Koilada, Pelei, Rado, and Fournos. Opposite Ermioni¢s coast lies the island of Dokos, where underwater research has revealed archaeological finds from the Early Helladic period, including one of the oldest shipwrecks in the world.
For those who enjoy walking, a must-do is the short hike through the Katafiki Gorge, connecting Ermioni with Fournos. The route takes about half an hour and offers breathtaking landscapes. Another unforgettable walk is through the orchards of Ermioni, famous for their exceptional pomegranates, considered among the finest on the market.
Ermioni is a region with well-developed tourist infrastructure. You will find hotels, rental rooms, and apartments to suit every budget. Entertainment options cater to all tastes.
Throughout the year, the town hosts cultural events, such as the unique “Yiala-Yiala” celebration of Epiphany. Young men about to begin their military service walk through Ermioni on the evening of Epiphany Eve, singing the traditional “Yiala-Yiala” song. In the morning, everyone gathers in decorated boats to catch the cross thrown into the sea.
The cultural highlights of August are also worth experiencing, culminating in the Choral Festival of August and the Fishermen¢s Festival, held in the village of Koilada on August 14th.
