Kritsa is the largest village in the Lasithi region. It is built at the foothills of Mount Kastellos, 9 km southwest of Agios Nikolaos. This village has a long history, having been inhabited since ancient times. At the Kontaratos site, you can see the ruins of the ancient city of Lato, which flourished during the 1st millennium BC.
Today, when visiting Kritsa, you can enjoy a walk through the lush nature and the picturesque village with its narrow streets and traditional houses. The village is famous for the woven fabrics and embroidery created by local women.
Be sure not to miss the Byzantine Church of Panagia Kera, located in the Logari area, dating back to the 13th century. It is a three-aisled church dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, Saint Anthony, and Saint Anne. The impressive frescoes stand out for their thematic richness and aesthetic quality, which approaches perfection.
