ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
 |
The Archaeological Museum of Ios is located in Chora and is housed in a magnificent neoclassical building, the Amiradakio Mansion.
Regarding its history, it is worth mentioning that the first archaeological collection on Ios was created in 1904 through the efforts of the mayor Fragoulis Kortesis. In the early 1980s, when excavations began, the need for the establishment of a museum became imperative. Thus, the Archaeological Museum of Ios was founded, displaying all the important findings that help unfold the history of the island. The museum consists of four halls, each dedicated to a different thematic section. More specifically, Hall 1 presents the natural environment of Ios and the history of archaeological research on the island.
The remaining exhibition space is dedicated to the Early Cycladic period. Visitors can see the findings from the excavations at the settlement of Skarkos and learn about the social organization, as well as the urban planning and architectural structure of this important ancient city. Among the exhibits, ceramic vessels, seats, tools, and animal bones stand out.
Hall 2 presents the history of the island during the Middle and Late Bronze Age. The exhibits mainly come from the excavations at the cemetery of Skarkos.
Halls 3 and 4 host findings dating from historical times. More specifically, they belong chronologically to the Archaic period and Late Antiquity. These exhibits originate from the ancient city of Ios. Particularly noteworthy are the collection of inscriptions and the funerary steles.
In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.
