CULTURE
The history of North-East Aegean islands go back centuries. Their roots are older than Sapfo, Homer and Pythagora.
The archaeological wealth impresses every visitor as the past lives through archaeological sites and reveals ancient secrets.
The Neolithic settlement of Poliohni, the sacred of Kavira in Lemnos, the ancient theater and the rare mosaics exhibited in the Archaeological museum of Lesvos, the museums of Lemnos, Chios, Samos, the Efpalinion Origma, the remains of Hera’s temple and the roman springs of Pythagorion in Samos, all reveal civilizations that bloomed in Aegean sea.
But the islands were at the front page during Byzantine times and Latest years as well.
The castles of Myrina, Mythimna, Chios, as and the relinquished castle-town of Anavatos, give islands a unique beauty. A baronial architecture along with a mysterious atmosphere create an idyllic scenery.
The beautiful decorated churches and monasteries built during Byzantine times attract thousands of visitors. The impressive architecture, religious heirlooms, murals and fine chancel screens make these islands ideal for religious tourism.
During the latest years the islands developed in industry. The old oil-presses, tanneries and soap factories operate today as houses of literature. Many of them are renovated and remind times of financial robustness.
The islands of north-east Aegean have a rich cultural inheritance to show. Through music, dancing and theater people express their feelings and create unique masterpieces. The cultural inheritance is of ultimate importance.
