Agios Kirykos is the port and the capital of the island. It is a charming town located on the southeastern side of Ikaria, combining Aegean tradition with a unique local character.
The settlement is built amphitheatrically around the harbor, making it ideal for leisurely strolls. The narrow streets lead to the neighborhoods of the town. Most houses are two-story with tiled roofs, but there are also several stone mansions that give the town an aristocratic elegance. Unique landmarks of Agios Kirykos include the neoclassical buildings housing the Town Hall, the Police Station, and the Port Authority.
It is worth visiting the Church of Agios Dimitrios, which is also the metropolitan cathedral. Inside, there is a trapdoor leading to a hidden cave where, according to local tradition, residents sought refuge during pirate raids.
Other notable churches in the town are Agios Kirykos and Agios Nikolaos. On the western side of the town, you will find the Monastery of Evangelistria, dating from the 17th century.
Ten kilometers from the town center, at the site of Fanari, you can see the ruins of the ancient city of Drakanos. Remains of the acropolis and a circular building from the 4th century BC, known as the Tower of Drakanos, have been preserved.
Agios Kirykos is also home to the island¢s Archaeological Museum, where you can see important finds from excavations on Ikaria. The same building houses the Folklore Collection of Ikaria, showcasing the island¢s local traditions.
Near the town, there are many beautiful beaches. You can swim at Agios Kirykos Beach. On the southern side of the town are the stunning sandy beaches of Anemomylos, Lefkada, and Xylosyrtis. On the northern side, the coastline stretches along Fanari and Therma.
It is worth noting that the area around Therma has a total of eight thermal springs, known since ancient times.
Agios Kirykos attracts the largest tourist activity on the island and is the most developed area in terms of tourist infrastructure. Here you will find hotels of all categories and complexes of rental rooms. It is also the heart of the island¢s nightlife. Although Ikaria is not famous for its cosmopolitan life, the town offers visitors plenty of options. There are bars playing Greek or international music and live music venues. For film lovers, there is also an open-air cinema.
