Poros is the capital and the port of the island. It is built amphitheatrically around a hill. It is a beautiful island town whose architecture combines traditional island elements with the elegance and grandeur of neoclassical buildings.
As the ship approaches the port of Poros, the view of the beautiful town captivates every traveler visiting the island for the first time and gives a delightful preview of what is to come.
At the highest point of the hill on which the town is built stands the historic clock tower of the island. Built in 1927, it is a unique landmark for Poros.
The first encounter with Poros begins at its port, which also concentrates the most tourist activity. Here, many cafés and tavernas operate, along with numerous shops where you can buy souvenirs and gifts to remember your stay on the island.
Along the coastal road, most of the neoclassical houses of the island are located. Continuing our exploration of the town¢s neighborhoods, we encounter Brinia, Mylos, Pounta, and Kasteli. These are the old districts of Poros, preserving their traditional architecture. The two-story houses, picturesque alleys, and friendly and welcoming residents all reveal unique images full of the colors and sounds of island life.
Among the island¢s landmarks, the Archaeological Museum is worth visiting, hosting findings from excavations at the Temple of Poseidon and Ancient Troizina.
The Municipal Library is also of great interest, featuring a large collection of rare books and unique editions.
Religious landmarks include the Metropolitan Church of Saint George, with the marvelous frescoes of the famous painter Parthenis. Built in a lush area with a stunning view of the Lemon Forest, the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, dating back to the 18th century, is also remarkable. Near the entrance of the monastery flows a spring, said to have healing properties. The monastery is surrounded by tall and strong walls. Its architecture is simple and represents typical island monastic architecture. Particularly impressive is its wooden carved iconostasis, crafted in Cappadocia of Asia Minor in the 17th century, as well as the wooden carved icon stand.
On the northeastern side of Poros lie the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, a Doric sanctuary from the 6th century B.C., of which only a few architectural elements remain.
The founding of the Russian Naval Base in 1834 played an important role in the island¢s modern history. Warehouses and bakeries were built to supply the Russian Fleet sailing the Aegean. Since 1989, the Russian Naval Base has been designated as a protected historical monument due to its great architectural and historical significance.
In Poros, you can swim at the three organized sandy beaches of the town. Nearby are the two beaches, Mikro Neorio and Megalo Neorio, which combine lush surroundings with crystal-clear waters.
