Melissia is a beautiful city located in the northern suburbs of Attica. It lies approximately 15 km from the center of Athens and is built on the foothills of Penteli. It is a developing city with modern infrastructure, yet it still retains its suburban character.
In the past, Melissia was part of Marousi. However, in 1946 it separated from Marousi and was recognized as an independent community. In 1990, it became an official municipality. Since then, following the rapid development that characterizes many areas of the Athens metropolitan region, the city has experienced significant construction. New apartment buildings and luxurious single-family homes continue to rise, attracting more Athenians who wish to live at the foothills of Penteli in an area that is not yet densely populated and still maintains a countryside charm.
Melissia still offers plenty of green spaces and recreational areas where residents and visitors can relax and enjoy a stroll at any time of the day. The city also has numerous shops for shopping, as well as restaurants and cafés.
Historically, Melissia has been inhabited since ancient times. According to Plutarch¢s historical text Theseus, villagers from Marousi and Vrilissos–Penteli settled in Melissia shortly before the 15th century BC. Throughout history, the area maintained its agricultural and pastoral character. During the Ottoman period, most of the land in Melissia belonged to the Penteli Monastery, founded in 1578 by the Bishop of Euboea, Timotheos.
After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, Melissia was settled by refugees. During that period, several hospitals and sanatoria were established in the broader area, including those of Tsagaris, Kalambokis, Papadimitriou, and others.
Over time, Melissia evolved into a modern city and a chic suburb of northern Attica, combining history, greenery, and contemporary urban living.
