Psiri

I want to go back to the old days, I want my old neighborhood, sings a beloved song cherished by people of all ages, evoking memories of innocence, carefreeness, and romance. One such neighborhood is Psyrri. A historic district that has seen both prosperity and decline, loved yet abandoned by its residents, until it was declared a protected area and began to be reborn from its “ruins.” Over the years, Psyrri has regained its former charm and once again captures the admiration of Athenians.
The historic district of Psyrri stretches along the northern side of Ermou Street. In recent years, the area has transformed into an artistic hub and much more. Psyrri is famous for its modern hangouts, offering a variety of restaurants, taverns, music bars, and cafés housed in renovated buildings of what was once a quiet neighborhood. Additionally, several theaters have been built in Psyrri in recent years, hosting remarkable performances featuring some of Greece¢s most popular actors.
The revival of Psyrri began slowly and steadily around 20 years ago when it was declared a protected historic neighborhood. At the time, its few faithful residents could hardly imagine that their “misunderstood” district would evolve into one of the city¢s favorite youth hubs. Initially, the restoration of some dilapidated interwar buildings was met with great relief and joy, both for the aesthetic improvement and for preventing the construction of multi-story apartment blocks next to the old two-story houses.
This marked the beginning of Psyrri¢s transformation. Gradually, theaters opened first, followed by bars, restaurants, and taverns, creating a chain of development. Along the route from Heroon Square to Sarri Street, the echoes from the shops create a soundtrack that perfectly reflects the district¢s eclectic nightlife and the wealth of choices it offers.
Beyond its entertainment options, Psyrri is also renowned for its shops. Here you¢ll find stores of every kind, selling new, old, and second-hand items—unique opportunities for those who know how to spot them. Psyrri is perfect for strolling. A walk at any time of day will captivate you. Wander through its charming alleys and let yourself be enchanted by the magic of old Athens…
