Koman is a small settlement in northern Albania, located on the Drin River. It is best known for Lake Koman, a long, narrow reservoir created by the hydroelectric dam at Koman. The lake sits at the edge of the Albanian Alps, surrounded by steep cliffs and dense forest, making the area feel remote and undeveloped.
The main reason travelers visit is to take the Lake Koman ferry, a two-to-three hour boat trip between Koman and Fierza. This route passes through dramatic canyon scenery that is often compared to Nordic fjords, though the atmosphere is more rugged and Balkan. The ferry also serves as transportation for remote communities, so you may see locals and goods being loaded during the journey.
Activities focus on nature and outdoor exploration. In addition to the ferry crossing, visitors can arrange speedboat tours, trips to the Shala River, or multi-day adventures that connect with Valbona Valley and hiking routes in the Albanian Alps. Accommodation in the area consists mainly of simple guesthouses and cabins with lake views.
Most travelers reach Koman from Shkodër by minibus or hired transport. Roads are winding and narrow, so travel times can be slow. The best period to visit is late spring through early autumn, when water levels, temperatures, and ferry schedules are most favorable.
Koman appeals to travelers who enjoy wilderness landscapes, slower tourism, and authentic local environments. It is less developed than coastal Albania, offering an adventurous and scenic experience rather than resort-style comfort. |
