ABOUT NORTH EVIA
Limni of Euboea, the ancient Elymnio, is in a distance of 87 km. from Chalkida and it is considered one of the most beautiful towns of Euboea. It is a marvellous town by the sea between Chalkida and Aedipsos with islander’s traditional architectural characteristics, historic places, monasteries with rich popular tradition, sandy beaches, wonderful countrysides. In the Historical and Popular Art Museum you will see represented traditional mansion of Limni, collection of historical objects of the revolutionary and postrevolutionary period, portraits of heroes of Limni, manuscripts and others. The sightseeing of the region is the byzantine monastery of St.Nicholas "Galataki" one of the most ancient in Greece and the most ancient in Euboea. Nearby it is situated the cavernous church of St. Andreas with remarkable sacred paintings of the 16th century. The beaches Kochyli, Katounia, Galataki, St. George are with pebble and the sea is very clean. In the northern part of Eyboean gulf it is located the well-known spa Aedipsos, famous from the antiquity for its curative springs. Besides the curative springs Aedipsos has a lot of natural beauties combined perfectly with the sightseeing of the modern city. It is in a distance of 117 km. from Chalkida. It has many buildings built in last century with the charactiristical yellowish stone, coloured from the mineral waters. The parks and the broad squares of the town are full of plane-trees and other shadowy trees. You can visit the cavern of Syllas near the springs of St. Anargyri and the women’s monastery of St. George Helion built in the place of the temple of Helios Apollo with its five springs all around. In the Baths of Aedipsos, in the place where the new hydrosanatorium, findings of archaeological collection prove the flourishing of the spa since antiquity. For swimming you can go to the beach of Loutra or to the beaches of Riviera, St.Nicholas, Mylos. Aghiokampos is a village by the sea in a distance of 129 km. north-west of Chalkida connecting by ferryboat regularly with Glyfa the facing coast of Fthiotida. You can also visit the Valanti forest and one of the taverns with fresh fish of the village. 139 km. north-east of Chalkida it is Istiaea with the bio-parks Mikro and Megalo Livadi where a great number of rare birds are gathered as well as the forest of St.Nicholas in Kanatadika, a natural monument. You can also visit the Museum of the Hunters’ Club with embalmed birds and animals, the archaeological collection housed in the Town Hall and to go for swimming in the beach of Kanatadika. In the road Istiaea-Chalkida, in a distance of 27 km. from Istiaea it is located since old times the village Hellinika in a hill full of pines with a marvellous view to the Aegean sea. Archaeological findings in the region lead to the conclusion that the village has been situated there long before 480 B.C. More specifically in the location Kastradaki they were found remnants of Cyclopian walls. For swimming ideal is the wonderful beach of Hellinika in the settlement of St. Nicholas. Pefki, port serving Artemissio with the traditional houses has a marvellous beach with the pines reaching the sea. It is in a distance of 118 km. from Chalkida and is connected by speed-boats with St. Constantine and by excursion ships with Skiathos. Neos Pyrgos is a new settlement on the road Istiaea-Aedipsos, in a distance of 7 km. from Istiaea, extending along an enchanting sandy beach. Today the village is alsmost joined with the town Orei. Neos Pyrgos has a surprisingly perfect street-plan as with regards to a village. There are also small taverns, cafeterias, night clubs, a fantastic beach extending in 2 km. and a small port. Neos Pyrgos is an ideal place for nature lovers. There is possibility for small excursions to the mountainous full of pines regions, whereas there are a lot of choices for one-day excursions. Connection with Aedipsos spa, Istiaea, Pefki and the other villages all around. The seasides located between Neos Pyrgos and Artemissio are an immense natural beach. The beach Pyrgos-Pefki is ideal for those liking all comforts during their vacations. The harbour of Orei from antiquity till the years of Turkish domination included was one of the best known Greek ports used as a base of operations of the Greek Navy during the Greek-Turkish wars of 1897 and 1912. Another beautiful city is Karystos combining the historical monuments with the marvellous beaches and the night life. In the eastern seaside of the city you can see the Venetian tower Bourtzi of the 13th century, while impressive is the Town Hall and the women’s monastery of St. Mavra. Other worthwhile monasteries is that of St. George in Metohi and Taxiarchon in Kalyvia. Near Kalyvia it is the green region St. Triada with springs, waters running and a cavern where there are findings of the Neolithic Age. One of the most beautiful by the sea villages of Euboea is Rovies combining the mountain and the sea. In the western end of the village in a location full of plane-trees you can visit the mouth of the river Gerania, whereas it is worthwhile to visit also the monastery of Holy David the Old-man, set up in the 16th century situated near a ravine with pines, plane-trees and waters running.
