CRETE
 |
Crete is the largest island in Greece. Thanks to its geographical location, it is located in a strategic point for the entire Mediterranean, Crete has always been a bone of contention for the powerful forces of history.
It is located between the Aegean Sea and the Libyan Sea. It is the crossroads between East and West, Africa and Europe. Its proximity to such different cultures and the conquerors who passed through the island throughout history contributed to the formation of the unique culture of the Cretans.
It is an island that has it all. Towering mountains (Psiloritis, Lefka Ori, Dikti), wonderful beaches that are washed by the Cretan Sea and others by the Libyan Sea. Fertile soils in which the famous Cretan fruits and vegetables are grown. The vast olive groves of the island produce the exquisite Cretan olive oil, while equally famous is the Cretan wine that comes from the island's vineyards.
Crete is administratively divided into four prefectures (Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Lassithi). All prefectures, or if preferred, all the cities and villages, have their own special history. The important archaeological sites that we find throughout the island and the important findings, attest to the great historical journey of the island. The Minoan civilization was a model for the ancient world and its course marked world history. The monuments of every historical period that are preserved on the island show that the lights of global interest have always been focused on it.
Today it is one of the most popular tourist destinations. For all the above reasons, as well as its very good tourist infrastructure, thousands of travelers from all over the world visit it every year to get to know this wonderful island. |
