 Chalki town

Chalki or Niborio is the graphic capital and the island’s port. The only settlement of the island is built amphitheatrically on the hill slopes around the safe cove.
First pictures of the island are the uniform double-decked houses with tiles. A beautiful and enchanting town that leaves the best of impressions. It is not accidental that Chalki is characterized as a preservable settlement.
Touring around the island can be really intriguing. Admiration for the traditional architecture, ancient monuments, byzantine monasteries and churches as and the beautiful landscapes, changes to a bitter feeling and melancholia for the deserted settlements. Mostly for the forsaken Palio Chorio, the island’s old capital. It is located 2,5km from the town and it is built on the banks of a hill. Today you will see the abandoned houses and churches, while on the top of the hill are saved the walls of Knights'’Castle. Inside the castle walls you will see the byzantine temple of Saint Nikolaos with important murals.
It is worth visiting the island’s monasteries. The sacred monastery of Taxiarch Michail, of Saint John and of Stavros, built during the byzantine period. Among the natural sites, really impressive are the two caves. The first one is in location Kelia, and distinguishes because there are saints’ icons carved into rocks. The second is in Amiglai location known as Kameno Cave. There, during the 17th century the Venetian admiral Morozini burnt the island’s residents to revenge them because they had informed Rhodes about his coming. So he didn’t manage to conquer the island.
The beaches of Chalki are famous for their natural beauties and clarity of waters. The closest to the town beach is Pantamos with a golden shore. In the south part of the island you will swim in Trachia and Ftenagia, while in the north part in the beaches of Sarri, Kania and Dio Giali. Or you can take a boat and visit the small island Alimia, between Chalki and Skala Kameirou. It is full of pine trees and has beautiful beaches.
