A preserved traditional settlement and protected historic site, Nymfaio is located at an altitude of 1,350 meters on the slope of Mount Vitsi. In the village, which until 1928 was called Neveska—a Vlach name meaning “Invisible Nymph”—cars are not allowed, as indicated by a sign at its entrance. Walking through its picturesque streets, visitors can see notable buildings such as the Nikeios School with its clock tower, which is used as a conference center, the ruined headquarters of the Macedonian Struggle, and the “House of the Goldsmiths,” a museum of silversmithing, history, and folklore. The village¢s central square is surrounded by traditional stone mansions, each one of unique beauty. In the forest outside the village, visitors can go horse riding, while a little further away, within a controlled area of 40 hectares, operates the European Brown Bear Protection Center “Arcturos.”
